Das Gebet Des Herrn

Franz Schubert

This winter during ordinary time, we will be singing "Das Gebet Des Herrn" from Franz Schubert's Deustche Mass. You all seem comfortable with the parts, so the purpose of the tutorial is to help you with the German. I have recorded myself pronouncing the German. I say each sentence twice, listen the first time and repeat with me the second time.

For those of you who have no German experience, if you can get the CONSONANTS right, you'll be headed in the right direction. The vowels ARE important, but the wrong consonants will really stick out. Here are a few things for you to learn about German Diction -

W becomes V; welchem becomes velchem
V becomes F; vater becomes fater
S at the begining of the word becomes a  VOICED Z; sohnes becomes zohnes
S between two vowels (intervocalic S) is VOICED like Z; grose becomes groze.
(A voiced Z is just like how we would say the z in the word word zoo)
CH - don't be afraid of the CH sound found in Macht, Ich, Dich, Nach, etc. To find this sound try this -
             Make a hard K sound - K K K
             Make a hard SH sound - SH SH SH
             Note where your tongue is for both consonants. For the K it rises in  the back, for the SH it rises in the front. Try to find a middle spot, a combination of the K and SH sound, where the tongue rises in the middle.
When there is an umlaut ":" on top of a vowel, add and E to the vowel sound;

Schopfer becomes Shoephfer (Like Koetter)

Grose becomes groese
